While almost every industry is facing a slowdown during this COVID pandemic, there is one exception. Against all odds, this industry is witnessing a boost in sales and higher engagement. This is the gaming industry. As most of us are staying indoors and getting bored, we tend to gravitate towards any means to entertain ourselves. Video games are one such medium and many new gamers are coming to the fold during this time. Many gaming companies reported increased sales during this quarantine period.
A boost for the video games industry as many gaming companies report higher sales
Gaming companies across the board are witnessing a spike in the number of players. Popular franchises such as Call of Duty (CoD) and Fifa are a few of them. This has led to a healthy financial performance at Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts for the first quarter of 2020. The gaming industry has seen sales hit records in recent weeks as more people turn to their entertainment services.
The developer of CoD, Activision Blizzard, said an average of 407 million people had played its games online each month in the first three months. ‘Warzone’, the latest CoD instalment had more than 60 million players since March.
Moreover, they also said that the numbers for World of Warcraft and Overwatch saw a rise. All this led to a net revenue collection of $1.44bn (£1.16bn) from digital channels for Activision Blizzard.
On the other side, Electronic Arts also reported more than 25 million players for its latest FIFA franchise. Other EA games such as Madden NFL 20 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order also saw a record number of online engagements.
In the first quarter, EA reported a net income of $418m which is nearly double than previous. They also said that their revenue rose to $1.4bn during this time.
Industry analysts are saying that many other companies will also have similar statistics. They also believe that if the situation doesn’t improve, the industry could witness growth for a few more months.
